The role of PR is being misunderstood: Do employers really understand the role of PR ?

Understanding the different roles of PRP’s by management is of out most important especially in social media.

In most cases pressure for most PR practitioners comes from the management’s misunderstanding of the role of Public Relations in a company. PR is a profession that is grossly misunderstood across board and is perhaps one of the professions with the most definitions. I think people often tend to define the role of PR by its most visible techniques and tactics but they fail to understand that PR is a process that involves research, analysis and feedback from the public. Looking at PR operations, PR operates on two levels: giving advice to employers or clients and strategically communicating to the public.

Most of the time employers believe that PR practitioners supposed to represent their company in a positive light at all times but is this true definition of Public Relations as a profession?.
If that’s the case then it means that lies, propaganda and manipulation become inevitable because no matter how good a company is , problems do occur sometimes and it is the duty of the PR professional to handle the crisis in a way that balance their loyalty to the employer and the public. inside PR.

According to my understanding it is not easy to say to your boss: I’m right. You’re wrong. Bosses do not understand PR better than the PR professionals, they understand profit margins and company image and that does not make them unethical but it’s just means they think differently.

That takes me back to my question, do employees really understands the role of PR?. let's get it rolling, what's your opinion on this matter.

  2. True, it is the fact that it is too broad that people tend to misunderstand it with various professions. I guess you won't get what it is about until you involve yourself with it.

    1. @ Mr Baloyi that means we have to be proud by joinng the PR field of study because it plays a vital role in our every day life. We need to put more effort in to practice to keep the industry growing and keeps on producing Professional Public Relations Practitioner who have required experience in the field.

  4. The sad part that most people are avoiding here is the fact that, no matter how much of a training or advice a PRP may give to the company's management, they will still be concerned about their profit margins. I believe that a few proper PRP's that we have and are ethical in the country should, by all means stage workshops that will only be attended by company bosses and shareholders to explain the duties and functions in the profession of Public Relations. This may, in all effect eradicate the notion among company executives that we are simply "spin doctors"

  5. I think the role of PR is not well understood by everyone but more specially companies. I mean many organisations still do not have PRP’s; they just let their marketing department handle everything PR related which is wrong. I think its high-time people and companies start taking PR serious.

  8. @ Mr Mwenya. You have brought foward quite a good point. It is true that each organisation has its rules and regulations that include ethical and unethical behaviour; the issue of unethical behaviour has become one that is so common in South Africa that it is no longer as surprising as in the past. I strongly agree with you, Mr Mgwenya, PRPs and employees have to frequently be reminded of ethics that they have to take into consideration regulaly, this would limit the number of scandals in the country.

  9. there is this one annoying name that PRP are called "Spin doctors" which simply refers to person employed to gloss over a poor public image (or present it in a better light). well I for one do not consider PRPs as spin doctors and I believe it is our responsibility to teach management what PR really is.

  11. Public relation is necessary for each and every company, but it is unfortunate that most companies do not understand the role its meant to play within the company. Therefore, most employers do not understand it.

    1. True that, so it is the duty of the PRP's to educate the management about the role of pr in a organisation and also to explain to them their duties as Public relations practitioners.

  12. I agree with you Public Relations is not understood by companies and society in general. When company employees a public Relations practitioner they expect them to generate money for them keep their image clean and show them in a positive light, which sometimes is not easy to do. And yes every company needs and should have a Public Relations practitioner but they need to be educated of the role of the PRP in the company.
